Stopped using voice assistants for my whole home automation, here's the catch
Three months ago I yanked every Alexa and Google Home out of my apartment in Austin. They kept mishearing commands and turning on lights at 2am for no reason, so I built a dumb switch panel with $45 of basic toggle switches instead. Now I get my phone out to check the app or flick a physical switch, which sounds like a downgrade but actually cuts down my action time. The tradeoff is losing the cool factor at parties, but I'll take reliability over impressing guests. Anyone else gone back to manual controls after a smart home disaster?

The "cool factor at parties" thing gets me, I ripped mine out after a voice command turned my thermostat to 85 while I was on vacation. Honestly, a $20 smart plug on the coffee maker and a basic switch for the lights does more than half the stuff those speakers bragged about.

Three Christmases ago I swore mine was genius, but a misfired playlist at 2am changed my mind completely.
