The 2008 archive purge in Austin still bugs me

Tbh, I was at a community meeting in Austin when the city decided to erase 14 years of public forum recordings to save server space. That moment taught me to keep my own copies of everything, even if it looks messy. Has anyone else lost important discussions to some dumb storage policy?

Went through something similar with a local radio station that wiped 20 years of live session recordings to make room for a podcast server, and the worst part is nobody backed them up because everyone assumed someone else was handling it. That archive was the only place we had some killer acoustic versions of local bands that never got released anywhere else. Now I just treat every recording like it's gonna vanish tomorrow and keep a copy on a hard drive in my closet.

Man, I gotta disagree with you there. Those recordings are gone for a reason, and keeping every piece of junk forever is how you end up with a closet full of dead hard drives and zero actual organization. I get that local bands were cool, but city meetings and radio sessions are not the same thing, and the radio station should’ve had a better plan than just hoping someone else saved it. Honestly, your closet backup is just as fragile as the server, one flood or power surge and poof, same problem. The real lesson is not hoarding everything, it’s figuring out what actually matters before it’s too late.
