The week my town lost power for 4 days and neighbors actually talked
Last February in Columbus, Ohio we had that ice storm that knocked out the grid for a big chunk of the west side. My street went dark on a Tuesday night and stayed that way until Saturday morning. First day was pure frustration, watching food thaw in the fridge and my phone dying. But by day two people were out on porches with coolers and camp stoves. The guy two doors down who I'd only waved at for 5 years brought over a pot of chili he cooked on his grill. The retired couple across the street set up a coffee station on their driveway using a percolator and a generator. We traded batteries, propane tanks, and stories about past outages. I learned more about my neighbors in those 4 days than in the whole decade before. Has anyone else had a blackout or disaster that actually made their block feel like a community?
