Walked past my old high school and the parking lot is all solar panels now

I drove by my old high school last weekend, the one I graduated from back in 2006. The whole front parking lot is covered in solar panel carports now, like a giant metal roof over every space. I remember we used to sit on the hoods of our cars after school and talk, but now you couldn't even see the sky if you tried. Has anyone else gone back to their old school and felt like it's a totally different place?

Did they put charging stations under them too or is it just shade for the cars? The panels themselves are probably saving the district a ton on electric bills in my experience though.

Seems like a lot of money just for some shade, not sure the power savings really add up that much once you factor in all the maintenance. Those panels need cleaning and repairs too.
