Client told me my fades were too "flat" - changed everything
Guy sits down, looks at my last cut still on the floor, says "man your fade line is clean but there's no depth." I was doing the same guard combo every time. He walked me through using a half guard lower to blend the dark spots. Took me three tries to get it right. Now my fades actually pop. Any of you guys have a regular who taught you something simple you missed in barber school?

That half guard move is a game changer once you see it work. What was the specific guard combo you were using before that he said was too flat?

Oh I love this! I used to think those barbers who talked about "depth" in fades were just making stuff up to sound fancy. But then a client of mine who used to cut hair in the military showed me the same thing. He said my fades looked like a solid wall of color instead of something that flowed. I had been skipping the half guard step completely, just going from a 2 to a 1 and wondering why it looked harsh. Now I take my time with that in between step and it makes all the difference. Sometimes the best lessons come from the chair, not the classroom.
