Had to choose between a $50 trimmer and a $150 one for my first year

I went with the cheaper Wahl instead of the Oster when I started cutting hair out of my garage last January. After 8 months the blade started pulling and chewing up clients' hair and I had to replace it anyway. Any other new barbers wish they just saved up for the pricier tool from the start?

Nah man I gotta disagree with you there. I've been using a $40 Wahl for almost two years now and it still cuts clean as the day I bought it. The trick is keeping the blades oiled and cleaning them after every few cuts. If your blade started pulling after 8 months you probably just needed to tighten the screw or replace the blade set which costs like $15. Spending $150 on a trimmer your first year is just throwing money away when you're still figuring out if you even like the gig. The cheaper one does the same job if you take care of it.

That $50 Wahl might work fine for some people, but 8 months is nothing for a tool you're using to make money. The Oster's motor and blade alignment are built better from the get go, so you're not replacing parts every year which adds up quick. Spending a little more upfront means you're not stressing about your trimmer messing up during a busy day.

Man I had a buddy who bought that expensive trimmer and then his dog ate the cord like a week later. He was too embarrassed to tell anyone so he just used scissors for two months. Sometimes the universe just doesn't care what you spent on your gear.
