Had to choose between a straight razor shave or a hot towel today at my shop
I had this guy come in yesterday who was a walk-in and he was super nice but he smelled like he'd been drinking since noon (which, hey, I get it, bartender instincts kicked in). He asked for a full beard trim and then gave me this ultimatum: either I use the straight razor for his neckline or I do the hot towel treatment but not both because he was in a rush. I went with the straight razor because I'm way more confident with it and honestly, it took like 8 minutes flat. The neckline came out clean but he complained that his skin felt a little rough after, so now I'm second guessing my call. Any of y'all ever get stuck between two services when a customer is impatient?

Man, people really get hung up on the smallest stuff don't they... it's a neckline not a surgery. You made the call based on what you're best at and it took 8 minutes, sounds like a win to me. He probably just needs to rub some lotion on it and move on with his day.

Figured nobody would mention this but maybe the guy just doesn't like his haircut for a different reason. Could be the neckline is irritating his skin or something. Not everyone has the same skin type. Some people get razor bumps easy. Maybe he's got a condition like eczema or psoriasis and it flares up after a fresh cut. 8 minutes is fast but doesn't mean quality. Speed isn't everything. Maybe he wanted a more detailed cut and felt rushed. Just a different way to look at it.

Did you ever catch a video where some barber talks about how a hot towel opens pores up but a razor can close them off quick? @clairem47 might be onto something about skin types cause not everyone's neck is built for a dry shave after a towel. I read this thing from a dermatologist online saying alcohol and skin don't mix well for shaving, so if the guy was drinking that could make his skin more sensitive than usual. The 8 minute thing is fine but maybe it meant you skipped a step like post-shave balm or something. I'd say you made the right call with your strong skill but next time slap some lotion on the guy and send him out the door. It's a rough spot cause he was in a hurry but you gotta cover all bases.
