My scissor-over-comb technique finally clicked after a rough patch
I was overthinking the angle and pressure. A mentor showed me to relax my grip and it worked wonders.

My buddy had the exact same thing happen last year, like he was totally frazzled trying to get it perfect. His instructor just walked over, told him to stop trying to strangle his tools, and literally loosened his fingers on the comb. The change was insane, his cuts just got smooth all of a sudden. It's funny how your brain can lock up on something until you remember to relax your hands.

Watched a barber competition once where this guy's hand was shaking so bad his fade lines looked jagged. Tbh I used to death grip my clippers thinking tighter control meant cleaner cuts. After hearing advice like your buddy got, I tried resting my pinky on the client's head for balance instead. My blending got way smoother in like two days, just from that one change in hand position.

Sometimes the client can feel that death grip tension too, like it travels right through the tools into their scalp. A relaxed hand doesn't just make the cut smoother, it makes the whole experience calmer for the person in the chair. They stop bracing for a rough pull or an uneven tug, which lets them sit stiller anyway. It becomes this quiet feedback loop where less force from you actually gives you more control.
