Switched from clipper over comb to shears over comb after a barber in Chicago showed me the light
I used to do all my fading and blending with clipper over comb for years. Thought that was the only real way to get a crisp taper. Then about 3 months ago, I sat in with a guy named Marcus on the South Side. He grabbed his shears and worked the top of a fade in like 4 minutes flat. The texture was way smoother, less harsh lines to clean up. Now I use my shears for the bulk of the blending, only touch the clippers for the very bottom. Anyone else make that switch or still sticking with clippers?

Ngl I gotta push back on this one. Clipper over comb just gives you way more control when you're working with different hair textures and densities. Shears over comb might look smooth on camera but in real life with thick or coarse hair it's a different story. You end up with uneven spots that clippers would have caught. Tbh Marcus might be good at what he does but that doesn't mean it works for every head. I've seen too many guys try to switch and end up with choppy blends.

Elizabeth900 is right about the coarse hair thing, I learned that the hard way when I tried shears on my buddy's thick afro and it looked like a lawnmower got angry at him. I still use clipper over comb for the initial shape and then shears for the fine finish, keeps me from crying into my comb later. You ever try that two-step method or just full send with the shears?

You gotta be careful with shears over comb on really coarse hair though. The shear blades can grab and chunk out a section if the hair is too thick or resistant. I tried the switch a while back and ended up with a hole near the crown that took forever to fix. Best advice I got was to use the shears for the initial blend but always check it with clippers after. That way you get the smooth look but catch any uneven spots before they mess up your work. For fine or medium hair shears are great, but for that thick horse hair it's a gamble.
