Royal Oak lump vs B&B briquettes, my Kamado Joe finally picked a side
Been using Royal Oak since I got the grill in 2021. Cheap, lights easy, but the ash buildup drove me nuts on long cooks. Last month I grabbed a bag of B&B briquettes on sale for $12 at the hardware store in Tulsa. Night and day. Less ash, steadier temp on a 6 hour brisket. I'm not going back. Anyone else ditch lump for briquettes after years of defending it?

...and here I was thinking I was fancy for using lump at all, turns out I was just paying extra for extra ash. Switched to briquettes last month after my 10 hour pork butt turned into a charcoal management session, spent more time shaking the grate than enjoying the smoke. B&B definitely holds its own, I was getting temp swings of like 40 degrees with Royal Oak on long cooks, now it's maybe 10. My wife still makes fun of me for being a charcoal snob for 5 years and flipping sides over $12 though.
