Appreciation post: I used to think the customer was always right, but after a guy in a suit yelled at me for 10 minutes over a $2.99 coffee refill policy, I now calmly quote the posted rules and let them walk away mad.

Has anyone else found that sticking to the policy, even when it feels harsh, actually saves your sanity in the long run?

Policies exist for a reason, and that guy's suit probably cost more than his yearly coffee budget. Sticking to the rules turns their tantrum into their problem, not yours. It's the only way to stay sane.

But does it really need to be a war over coffee? Sometimes a rule is just a dumb rule made by someone who never has to deal with the public. Letting one guy slide with his fancy suit doesn't mean the whole system falls apart.
