Bartender for 12 years and last night a guy tipped me $50 on a $12 tab then asked if I could front him a beer next time
Has anyone else had customers try to buy goodwill like this or am I overthinking a sweet gesture?

Honestly, I think you might be overthinking a decent gesture. A fifty on a twelve dollar tab is just a big upfront tip to build a little rapport, not some shady manipulation. He probably just wants to know you'll remember him next time and hook him up, which is pretty standard in this industry. Ngl, I'd take that deal any day over the usual zero-tippers who expect free stuff for nothing.

Jokingly asked my regular if he wanted fries with that fifty. He didn't laugh. Guess I'm not as funny as I think. But hey, a fifty on twelve bucks? I'd probably forget my own name before I forgot a customer like that.
