Debate: do you side with the customer who records everything or the worker who refuses service?

Had a guy at my register last week in St. Louis who held up his phone the whole time and said he was recording for 'quality assurance.' I asked him to put it away per store policy and he went off about his rights and how he's been burned before by cashiers. I get it, people have had bad experiences, but it feels super disrespectful when someone films you without asking. On the other hand, some workers really do mess up orders or act rude and having proof could help. So who's in the wrong here? Has anyone else had a customer pull out a phone mid transaction like that and how did you handle it?

Honestly I used to side with the customer on this but after stocking shelves and dealing with people shoving phones in my face for months my view totally flipped. It’s one thing to record in public but when you’re inches from someone trying to do their job it just feels like intimidation, not protection. Tbh there’s got to be a middle ground where people can call out bad service without making every worker feel like they’re on trial.

Wait, @lisa5, are you telling me people actually shove their phones in your face just inches away? That is absolutely wild to me. I mean, I get recording in a store or on a sidewalk, but getting that close feels more like a threat than a simple complaint. There has to be a line between protecting yourself and just being plain rude to someone who's clocked in to work.

Nah I gotta disagree. If you're doing your job right what's the problem? People aren't recording cause they want to ruin your day, they're trying to protect themselves from bad service or getting ripped off. Don't want a phone in your face then give them a reason not to pull it out.
