Found out my coworker makes $4 more an hour for the same job

I was going through some old paperwork last week and saw a payslip on the printer by accident. Turned out the new guy hired 6 months after me at our Denver location makes $22.50 an hour while I'm stuck at $18.50 doing the exact same register and stocking work. I asked my manager about it and he just said 'market rate adjusted.' So is it on me for not negotiating harder or is it shady that they didn't bump me up too? Has anyone else dealt with this wage gap thing at their job?

Is it just me or does it seem like loyalty to a company never really pays off anymore? They'll bring in new people at higher rates all the time but act like they can't afford to give you a raise. I've seen it happen way too many times with friends and family, like the whole system is set up to keep us quiet and grateful for what we get.

And the REALLY messed up part is how they act like you're being greedy for even ASKING. Like you're supposed to just be thankful they gave you a job in the first place. But tell me this, how many times have you watched a new hire get trained by someone who's been there five years and then that new person starts out making more money? What exactly is the "loyalty" argument supposed to do for you when the company straight up shows you they value a stranger more than someone who already knows the job?
