Hit 10 years running my own moving company last month and it kind of snuck up on me

I mean, I knew it was coming up but when I actually looked at the calendar it felt weird. Ten years ago I was just a guy with a beat up truck and a dolly who thought I'd maybe last a year. Now I have three trucks and a crew of six and we do like 400 moves a year in the Twin Cities area. I think what surprised me most is that the number kept growing even when I wasn't paying attention. Like one day I was the guy lifting couches and now I'm the guy doing payroll and fixing flat tires on the truck at 6 AM. Has anyone else hit a milestone like that where you just kind of blinked and it happened?

Whoa, three trucks and 400 moves is way more than just "growing without noticing," you built an actual business.

Three trucks and 400 moves, yeah I guess that does sound like a real business when you say it out loud @the_lee. Funny how you start off doing small jobs for friends and next thing you know you're juggling schedules and payroll. Still feels weird walking into the lot and seeing my name on three box trucks.

Honestly, how much of your time is spent on the actual moving part versus managing the people and trucks now? Like, at what point did you realize you needed to stop being the guy hauling couches and start being the guy making sure everyone else is hauling couches right? I'm curious if you had a specific moment where you knew you had to step back from the hands-on work or if it just kind of happened.
