Hot take: I was wiping tables wrong for 3 months and a regular finally called me out
I work at a breakfast spot in Columbus and always wiped tables in circles with a wet rag, then called it done. Last Tuesday a regular named Doreen, who has been coming in for like 6 years, watched me do it and said "honey, you are just pushing the syrup around, not picking it up." She grabbed two rags, one wet and one dry, and showed me how the wet one lifts the mess and the dry one actually finishes the job. I timed it and her way took 15 seconds longer per table but the napkins stopped sticking to the finish, which customers had been complaining about for weeks. My manager even asked what changed because our Saturday morning complaints dropped from like 5 a shift to almost none. How was I supposed to know this stuff if nobody trains you on it? Does your shop actually teach new hires how to clean a table or do they just hand you a rag and hope for the best?
