I finally stopped arguing with customers about prices after working the register at a flea market
Back in 2018 I was working a booth at the Brimfield Antique Show in Massachusetts. Some guy kept trying to haggle me down on a $20 lamp that was clearly worth double that. I spent like 10 minutes explaining the maker's mark and the original paint and he just walked away. That day I realized I was wasting my breath on people who will never care about the details. Now I just say "that's the price" and move on to the next person. My sales actually went up after I stopped treating every interaction like a debate. Has anyone else had to unlearn that habit of over-explaining your stuff?

Drop the whole debate club mentality the second you realize they're not asking real questions. I used to pull out my phone and show people the exact same item sold on ebay for more money and they'd still argue with me about shipping costs or some dumb technicality. The turning point for me was when I started treating price arguments like a bad game of chess where you just let them make their move and then you don't react at all. You gotta learn that some people are just practicing their haggling skills on you like you're a free training dummy. Once I stopped giving them any fuel they either bought it or walked away in like 10 seconds flat. Now I just say "nope that's the price" with a little smile and it kills the whole negotiation before it even starts.

the thing nobody talks about is how some people aren't even trying to get a lower price, they're just trying to feel like they won something. they don't want the item as much as they want the dopamine hit of getting one over on you. once i realized that selling isn't about winning or losing arguments it's just about moving stuff for a fair price, the whole vibe changed.

Wait, people actually haggle just for the rush not the item?
