Honestly, doesn't that just mean you've changed a lot? Tbh I'd be more surprised if a store owner remembered every single kid who grew up and moved away.

Yeah "changed a lot" is the key part. We all get new haircuts, different glasses, maybe gain or lose weight. After a few years you're basically a stranger to someone who only saw you as a kid. It's pretty normal to be forgotten.

What about the reverse though? What if someone remembers you but you've got no clue who they are? That's happened to me a couple times. Some older guy at the hardware store calls me by name, starts talking about my dad's old truck like it was yesterday. I'm standing there trying to place him, but all I got is a blank. Now I feel like an ass because he clearly remembers me as a kid and I can't even place his face. So maybe it cuts both ways - we all forget more than we realize, and getting remembered isn't always a win.
