Was skeptical about that whole tip pooling thing until it actually helped my paycheck
I work at a cafe in Austin where we switched to a tip pool system 3 months ago. At first I was mad because I'm a fast barista and thought I'd lose money to slower coworkers. But after checking my pay stubs, I'm actually making $40-50 more per week because the tips even out during slow shifts when I'd normally get nothing. Has anyone else had a change of heart about tip pooling after giving it a real chance?

Hold up though, I think there's a small thing to straighten out here. Tip pooling usually means everyone shares tips from all shifts together, not just evening out slow days. If you're making more on slow shifts, that's just the smoothing effect of pooling over time. The real win isn't just slow day coverage, it's that the whole team pulls together on busy days and everyone gets a cut. Did your cafe switch to a full pool or is it still where front of house keeps their own and back of house splits?

Bro I feel you on the "I thought I'd lose money to slower coworkers" part, that was literally my first thought too. But reading your post made me realize I was probably overestimating how much I actually carried during busy rushes. Yeah I pull more shots than the new hire but when it's slow and I'm just wiping counters, those pooled tips from the weekend crowd really do keep my weekly total up. It's not some huge conspiracy to screw over the fast workers, it just makes more sense than I wanted to admit.
