Watched a new hire get verbally wrecked over a 2 cent upcharge
Last Friday at the diner I work at, a lady ordered extra ranch and the new kid added the 50 cent charge. She went ballistic, screaming about how it's 'free everywhere else' and made him void it, then demanded a manager. The manager just took it off and gave her a free pie to shut her up. Meanwhile the kid looked like he wanted to quit on the spot. I get that policies are the manager's call, but how do you all handle customers who flip out over tiny fees without throwing your staff under the bus? Has anyone else dealt with this exact thing?
The customer was right. You don't charge for ranch, that's the stupidest hill to die on and the kid should've known better. Every place around here gives that stuff away free because it costs them pennies and keeps people happy. The manager didn't throw anyone under the bus, he fixed a dumb mistake that would've lost a regular over a rounding error. That kid learned a cheap lesson about reading a room. If you can't handle a screaming lady over 50 cents, then food service probably isn't for you anyway.
