Appreciation post: My local library had a book from the 80s with wild torque specs
Pulled 'The Bicycle Wheel' by Jobst Brandt. It said a 36-spoke wheel only needs 80 in-lbs on the nipples. That's way lower than I've ever set them. Anyone else seen this old data and tried it out?

Yeah that 80 in-lbs spec seems crazy low. I've always had to crank them way tighter to keep a wheel from going out of true.

Eighty inch-pounds wouldn't even hold my grocery-getter bike together. I have to take my track bike up past 120 just to feel safe sprinting out of the saddle. That factory spec is for a display model that never gets ridden.
