Old bike shop guy told me to stop using WD-40 on chains and I ignored him for 3 years
Turns out he was right, my chain wore out in 6 months instead of the usual year and a half, has anyone else had a shop veteran call them out on a bad habit?

Tried the same thing myself and switched to a dry lube after my chain snapped mid ride. Shop guys usually have a reason for what they say.

Your chain snapped because of poor maintenance or a worn out chain, not because you used wet lube. Dry lube washes off the second you hit a puddle or ride through morning dew. Shop guys push dry lube because it keeps their floors clean and they don't have to deal with complaints about greasy chains when people bring bikes in for service. Wet lube actually stays on the chain where it needs to be and protects in real riding conditions. Most of those shop employees are weekend warriors who don't ride in the rain or through mud anyway. Stick with wet lube and just wipe the chain down after every few rides, that's what actually works.

Funny how we all learn that lesson the hard way, right? That shop guy was probably trying to save you some money and a snapped chain in the middle of nowhere. Once you see how fast a dry chain eats itself up, you start listening to those old heads a lot more.
