Shop owner in Boise said to soak rusty chain in vinegar for 24 hours, worst mistake I've made
He swore by it for a seized chain on a 1987 Schwinn and I had nothing to lose, but it came out looking clean and snapped 2 miles into my test ride. Has anyone found a soak that won't eat the metal?
Skip the vinegar, it's way too harsh on old chains no matter what some shop guy swears by. A snapped chain a couple miles in sounds more like a chain that was already shot than one killed by an overnight soak. Just hit it with some penetrating oil and a wire brush next time.
