Actually, wiping the chain area first is key, @stellac66, because that's where the worst grit hides.

Totally! I started doing the exact same thing last season. Wiping the handlebars and top tube first means I'm not transferring road grime to my hands every time I adjust the bike in the stand. Getting the worst of the dirt off the chain area before I start keeps my bench mat way cleaner. Makes the whole job feel less messy before I even pick up a wrench.
