Snapped a chain on a group ride in Portland, fixed it roadside in 9 minutes flat

Was on a Saturday morning pace ride with about 15 people near the Springwater Corridor. Hit a small rise, shifted under load, and the chain snapped clean at the pin. Felt that sudden drop in pedal resistance and knew right away. Pulled over, another rider stopped to help. I had a quick link in my saddle bag and a chain tool. Took out the busted link, shortened the chain by one link, put the quick link on with a pair of pliers I carry. Whole thing took maybe 9 minutes and I caught back on the regroup point. Chain was 2 years old with maybe 4,000 miles on it, so I can't be too mad. But it's the first time I actually used a chain tool on the road instead of just carrying it. Anyone else had a chain snap in a spot where you didn't have a spare full link, and how did you handle the length change? That one-link difference shifted my rear derailleur adjustment for the rest of the ride.
