TIL that those ultrasonic cleaners for bike chains are a total waste if you skip the degreasing step first

I spent $60 on a cheap ultrasonic cleaner from Amazon and ran my dirty chain through it without any degreaser, and after three cycles it was still caked in black gunk so I basically just warmed up the dirt for free, has anyone else found a solvent that actually works in these things without making a mess?

Warmed up the dirt for free" - that's a hell of a way to describe it, but I've been there too. Sounds like you skipped the prep work, which is exactly what @derekward was getting at, not that I'm calling you out or anything. I tried running a chain through one of those with just hot water and dish soap once, and all I got was a slightly cleaner layer of grime on top of the old grime. My advice is to grab a cheap citrus degreaser from the auto parts store, spray the chain down first, let it sit for five minutes, then toss it in the ultrasonic with some fresh degreaser and water mix. It'll still make a mess if you splash around, but at least the chain will actually come out clean.

Everything in life works better if you do the prep work first.

Sometimes overthinking the prep just wastes time you could be using to get it done.
