Torque wrench calibration drift caught my attention on a 54T chainring swap

Replaced a chainring last month in Columbus and used my beam torque wrench on the 8mm bolts. It clicked at the claimed 12 Nm but the bolts felt loose after a test ride. I checked it against a digital unit and it was reading 20 percent low. Has anyone else found older beam wrenches drifting like that, or should I just buy a new one every couple seasons?
