A telescoping magnet wand is your best friend here, the kind mechanics use for dropping bolts in engine bays. Fish it down past the spindle and the bit will snap right to the tip, no grease or swearing required. Just check the magnet is strong enough first, because a weak one will grab the bit then lose it halfway out and you're back to square one.
