Used the wrong chain tool for 4 months and only noticed when a customer asked why his bike clicked
I've been pushing pins out with a chain breaker that was missing the little back plate for months, just letting the pin rest on the bench vise behind it. Last week a guy brings in his road bike complaining about a click every pedal stroke, and I pull the master link only to find a pin mushroomed on one side. Turns out my "technique" was bending every pin I installed, and I'd done maybe 30 chains that way. He stood there watching me redo it while I tried to look like this was the first time it ever happened. The park tool rep at the shop down on Vine told me the plate costs 6 bucks and I felt like a real pro. Anyone else got a tool they've been quietly misusing for way too long?
Wait, you did 30 chains like that and nobody came back before this guy? That is wild. I mean I get spacing out on stuff but 4 months of pushing pins with nothing backing them is next level. The fact that the mushroomed pin was the first real clue is kind of lucky honestly, could've been way worse with a pin letting go mid ride. Also the customer just standing there watching you fix it is my worst nightmare, like having a live audience for your mistake.
