I was gonna sign a 12 month lease in Austin and my sister talked me out of it in one phone call
I moved to Austin 8 months ago for a job and was about to lock in a 12 month lease at $1,850 a month because I was scared of not having a place. My sister asked me one question: what happens if the job doesn't work out in 90 days? Turns out I could barely answer her, so I found a 3 month sublet instead for $1,100 and kept my options open. Three months in, the company changed my whole team and I ended up moving to a different part of town. Now I just do month to month or short sublets, costs a little more per month but way less than paying to break a lease. Has anyone else just refused to sign long leases after getting burned?

Signed a year once, landlord sold the building in month two.
