3 episode rule finally failed me on a 12 episode show

Usually I stick to the 3 episode rule. If it doesn't grab me by then, out it goes. But last month I gave a sci-fi show about 8 episodes because my buddy kept pushing it. Nothing clicked, the pacing was brutal, and the main character made terrible choices. My buddy finally admitted he only liked the last 2 episodes. I wasted 6 hours of my week on that. Anyone else have a show that took way too long to get good, or did I just get bad advice?
