Can we talk about how I used to hate subtitled shows?

For years I refused to watch anything with subtitles. I thought it was too much work to read and watch at the same time. Last year my friend kept pushing me to try Dark on Netflix, a German show. I finally gave in during a rainy weekend and put the first episode on. About 20 minutes in I realized I wasn't even thinking about the subtitles anymore, I was just following the story. Now I have watched over 15 foreign series in the last 12 months. Has anyone else had that moment where subtitles just clicked and opened up a whole new world of shows?

Oh man, the "it's too much work" excuse is exactly what I told myself for years. Finally caved and watched Squid Game just to see what the hype was about, and now I'm three seasons deep into a random Korean drama about a law firm. It's like my brain just learned to read and watch at the same time without even trying.

Nah, I gotta push back on this @elizabethg18. The "it's too much work" thing isn't just laziness for some of us. Some people genuinely struggle with subtitles because of visual processing stuff or ADHD. It's not about not wanting to try, it's about knowing your own limits. I've tried with Squid Game and a few others, and I spent the whole time missing what was happening on screen because I was reading. It's like trying to pat your head and rub your belly at the same time, just with your eyes. Glad it worked for you, but it's not a one size fits all thing.

It’s like patting your head and rubbing your belly, yeah. I tried it during Parasite and gave up halfway.
