Found out skipping the first 2 episodes of that new mystery show made it way easier to follow
The first two episodes were 40 minutes of backstory that didn't matter until episode 4, so I went back and watched them after and wished I'd just skipped them from the start.

Whoa, I gotta push back on that one. Skipping the setup episodes feels like showing up late to a movie and then acting like it was better that way. Those first two episodes are where they plant all the little clues that pay off later, even if it's subtle at the time. I remember a similar show where the main character's backstory in episode 2 about their dad ended up being the whole key to the final twist. You might have found it easier to follow by skipping, but I bet you missed a lot of the craft. Good storytelling is meant to build on itself, not just dump exposition.
