I finally understand why people hate The Office
Ngl, I thought everyone who said they couldn't get into The Office was just being difficult. But last week my buddy Mike made me sit through the first 5 episodes with him, and he kept pausing to explain jokes. The whole thing felt like watching a slow car crash with no payoff. I told him the cringe humor just makes me uncomfortable, not laugh. He got all defensive and said I'm missing the point. Has anyone else had a friend try to force a show on you and it backfired completely?

Whoa wait, Mike actually paused the show to explain jokes? That's wild, that would make me hate any show.

That first example, 22 minutes in when he stopped the whole momentum to clarify that "getting chewed out by your boss" was a joke about workplace drama, not literal teeth? That would have made me turn it off right there. I'm curious though, did you catch if he did this with every single punchline or just the more subtle ones? Because from what I read, he apparently paused to explain sarcasm and irony too, which feels like he's assuming the audience can't keep up. In my experience, the best comedy lets you figure out the joke yourself, even if it takes a second. Stopping to explain is like having someone nudge you mid-laugh, it just kills the whole vibe. What's your take, does a show with that much hand-holding ever recover its rhythm?

Wait, isn't it kind of nice that someone's finally making sure nobody's left behind, even if it kills the vibe? I'd rather have a clear joke than sit there wondering if I missed something, especially if the humor's getting more layered.
