Just changed my mind about true crime after visiting Cedar Falls, Iowa last weekend
Walking through the small downtown there and seeing how peaceful everything was made me realize these shows blow the danger way out of proportion, has anyone else had that feeling after visiting a quiet town?

You know what, I actually get that. My whole perspective on true crime shifted a few years back, but not because of a peaceful town. I was watching this show and got so scared I locked myself in my bathroom for like an hour. The thing is, I couldn't even remember what I was scared of after I came out. Turns out the most dangerous thing that happens in my neighborhood is the neighbor's cat trying to trip me on my way to the mailbox. I think we just get so caught up in the drama and the suspense that we forget most places are just boring and safe. My heart can't handle the jump scares anyway, so I'm better off sticking to reruns of old sitcoms.

Yeah "got so caught up in the drama" is exactly it. I think the whole genre feeds on that feeling of tension and suspense, but real life just doesn't have that same pacing. You go to a place like Cedar Falls and there's nothing happening, just people living their boring, normal lives. It makes you realize the shows are basically entertainment with a tiny slice of reality mixed in. Once you step away from the screen and breathe actual air in a quiet town, the fear just kinda fades and you feel silly for ever buying into it that hard.
