Rant: my cousin put on a show at a truck stop in Amarillo and now I watch everything with subtitles on
I was stuck at a Pilot outside Amarillo back in February waiting on a load, and this other driver had a tablet propped up playing some Korean thriller. I sat down with my coffee and watched 2 episodes over his shoulder, and the subtitles were on the whole time. I'd never really done that before, always just dealt with the dubbing or skipped foreign stuff. Now I've burned through 3 shows that way and honestly I catch way more of what's going on. Anyone else switch to subs and never go back?
That line about watching 2 episodes over his shoulder at a Pilot outside Amarillo hit me because I've been that guy with the tablet before. Man, I feel you on this one, it sneaks up on you and then all of a sudden you can't watch anything without them. I used to fight subtitles so hard, figured I'd miss stuff looking down at the words, but turns out I was missing way more with the dub. The actors' real voices carry so much that the dubbed version just flattens out, and you pick up on little things you'd never catch otherwise. My wife still gives me grief because now I even turn subs on for stuff in English, which she says is insane. But once your brain gets used to reading and watching at the same time, going back feels like watching with the sound off.
