Rewatching The Wire after 10 years and I totally missed the point

I first watched The Wire back in 2014 when I was 22 and thought it was just a cop show with good dialogue. This time around I'm on season 3 and realized it's really about how broken institutions are, not just the drug war. My buddy in Baltimore kept telling me to pay attention to the dock workers arc and I brushed him off, but now that's all I can think about. Has anyone else gone back to a show they loved and found a completely different show underneath?
