A guy at the hammer-in told me my anvil was too loud...

He was a old smith who said my ring was hurting the shop atmosphere. I put a heavy magnet under the heel and it quieted everything down way more than I expected. Anyone else had to adjust their anvil setup based on shop noise complaints?

Read somewhere that anvils with loose bases tend to ring way worse.

Saw something like that on a blacksmith forum too.

Oh jeez, I totally had that backwards. I used to think a heavier or more solid base would make an anvil ring more because there's more material to vibrate. But when @the_lucas shared that blacksmith forum post a while back, it clicked for me. That loose base is basically acting like a rattly tambourine, killing the clean ring. Makes total sense now when I think about it - a solid anchor damps things out way better than a wobbly one.
