I finally stopped quenching in the dark after a guy at the Madison forge meet showed me his color chart
Went to a small hammer-in outside Madison two months back and this older smith had a laminated color chart taped right to his quench tank. I'd been eyeballing my steel by the light of a single shop bulb for close to a year, guessing at that cherry red. He had me hold a piece next to his chart and I was pulling it about 150 degrees too cool, which explained the 3 or 4 chisels that chipped on me. Cost me 4 bucks to print my own chart that next week. My last batch of punches came out dead on. Anyone else run into a trick at a meet that made you feel silly for not knowing it sooner?
