Old timer told me my hammer face was too rough, took me 2 weeks to get it right

Been hammering for 6 years at my shop outside Pittsburgh. Guy who's been forging since the 70s watched me work a billet and said I was leaving scale marks all over. Didn't even see it myself. Spent 2 weekends dressing the face with a worn file and fine grit. Difference is night and day, less grinding after each pass. Anyone else got a simple fix from a veteran that you overlooked for way too long?

Talked a buddy of mine into buying a cheap belt sander for his hammer heads, he fought it for years. One weekend of hitting the face flat changed his whole game, he still cusses himself for not doing it sooner.
