Old timer's advice about quenching oil nearly ruined my blade

A guy named Earl over in Tulsa told me to use used motor oil for quenching, said it worked fine for him for 30 years. I tried it on a batch of 5 knives and got cracks on 3 of them right at the edge. Switched back to canola oil heated to 130 degrees and haven't had a single crack since. Anyone else trust old shop lore and regret it?
