My $18 Goodwill bread machine sat in a closet for 2 years until my oven died on Thanksgiving
My oven died at 4pm on Thanksgiving two years back in Spokane, and I had a $18 bread machine from Goodwill sitting in a closet for 2 years. I ended up baking 3 loaves in that thing and they came out better than anything I ever made in a full size oven, so now I use it for all my bread and the oven just holds pots. Does anyone actually prefer baking bread in a regular oven over a cheap machine?
Oh man, the Thanksgiving oven death is such a real thing. Mine quit on a random Tuesday and I did the same panic bake in a machine I'd gotten at a yard sale for like ten bucks. What surprised me was the dough setting, letting it knead and rise in there first, then shaping and doing the second rise on the counter before baking. That one change made my loaves way less dense than just dumping everything in and hitting start. Also the pan size on those machines is smaller so the bread bakes more even, no weird hot spots like my old oven had.
