Question about using a headlamp for night fishing vs a lantern

Honestly, I used to drag a gas lantern to the lake every night for 3 years. Last month I forgot it and had to use my cheap headlamp instead. Ngl, the light beam stays right where I look, so I can tie knots and see the bobber without blinding myself. But I miss the warm glow that keeps bugs away and spreads wide so my buddy can see his rod. Has anyone else switched to headlamps and found they work better for casting in the dark, or am I just cheaping out?

I remember reading that gas lanterns actually draw bugs in from a wide area because of the heat and light, so they don't really keep them away. A headlamp with a red light mode is way better for night vision and doesn't mess with your buddy's setup if you just shine it down. Have you tried rigging a small diffuser over the headlamp to get that spread when you need it?
