Skipped the $40 oil change, paid $680 for a tow on I-80

I pushed my Hyundai past the 3,000 mile mark because I figured it was fine, and the engine seized at mile 4,102 outside of Reno last Tuesday. The mechanic said sludge had built up from ignoring it twice in a row. I learned that saving a few bucks on synthetic oil is the dumbest math I've ever done. Has anyone else learned this lesson the expensive way, or am I the only fool here?

Used to treat oil changes like a suggestion, not a rule. My last car went 8,000 miles between changes and ran fine for years, so I figured the whole 3,000 mile thing was a scam. Then my buddy’s Subaru threw a rod on the highway at 120k, and the rebuild quote was more than the car was worth. That was the moment I started setting a reminder on my phone for every 5k, no exceptions. Cheaper than a bus ticket home, that’s for sure.
