A guy at the game store in Toledo said my favorite game was 'just a reskin of Catan' and I'm still annoyed about it.

Ugh, that's the worst kind of comment... It's so lazy. What game was it, anyway? Because that feels like someone just saying the first thing that pops into their head to sound smart. Even if two games share a mechanic, the feel is totally different.

Totally agree with elliotadams about the feel being different. People miss how small rule changes or even the theme can make the same mechanic play out in a totally new way. It just shows they haven't actually tried both games properly.

Yeah, I used to say stuff like that too until a friend made me play both back to back. The details in setup and how you trade change the whole game, like elliotadams said. It's a lazy take that misses the point.
