Caught myself explaining turn order to the rulebook at 2am
Three weeks ago I ran a teaching game of Pipeline for two friends. I kept telling them the auction phase happens before purchasing, which felt off but I trusted my memory. Around midnight he flipped to page 14 and pointed out the actual order. Every game I taught for about a year had the wrong flow, nobody ever questioned it because I spoke with such confidence. Anyone else discover they invented a house rule by accident and stuck with it way too long? What finally corrected you?
My buddy and I played Ticket to Ride for like two years thinking you could only draw one card per turn. At a game night some guy pulled two and we both just stared at him like he was cheating. We had taught at least six people that wrong rule by then. What fixed it was me finally reading the little card symbol on the board while waiting for pizza to arrive. Now I do a quick skim of the rulebook before I teach anything, even stuff I know cold. Takes five minutes and saves a whole night of bad habits.
