Hot take: The game cafe in Portland had a 'no talking during setup' rule

I went to this place called Meeple Mountain in Portland last weekend and they actually had a sign saying no talking while you're setting up the game. I thought it was a joke until the owner came over and shushed me for asking where the dice were. Has anyone else run into a house rule that just killed the vibe right away?

Honestly, that's so weird. Did the owner actually explain why they have that rule? Was it like a strategy thing to keep the vibe quiet or just them being control freaks?

the_charlie said it was like a strategy thing to keep the vibe quiet" - nah, it's not about strategy. The owner told me it's because they had people knocking over pieces and spilling drinks while reaching across the table to grab dice or cards during setup. They said it's a safety thing to keep everyone settled before the game starts. Still seems like a stiff way to run a place though.
