Lost a game at PAX Unplugged in Philly because I let a stranger talk me out of my move, do you trust the table or your gut?

Was playing a 4 player game of Root at PAX Unplugged back in December and a guy at my table convinced me to attack the Woodland Alliance instead of the Marquise, so I did and he won 2 turns later. Now I wonder if I should just stick to my own read or keep listening when someone at the table makes a case, how do you all handle table talk?
