Tried teaching a new player Catan by letting him win, and it backfired bad
Last month my regular group in Dayton let a first timer take the win in his very first game of Catan, figuring it would hook him and he would come back. He rolled with it, but then he spent the next two weeks bragging at work about how he beat four experienced players his first try, and two of those coworkers now refuse to play with him. What I learned is that handing someone a win teaches them the wrong lesson about a game that runs on tight trades and table talk. Next session he tried the same reckless strategy, got boxed in by turn six, and quit halfway through. Has anyone found a way to go easy on a new player without them walking away with the wrong idea about how the game actually works?
