An old welder in a Milwaukee shop told me 'a clean weld is a strong weld' but I've seen some ugly ones hold just fine.

Feel that. Seen some real ugly welds that held up better than the pretty ones.

Yeah, what makes a weld strong anyway? @the_iris is right about ugly ones holding up, so maybe the old saying is more about good prep work. A clean joint before you start is way more important than how it looks after. The pretty ones can have hidden problems if the metal wasn't ready.
